Energy Efficiency Day is a collaborative effort between companies, governments, and advocacy groups worldwide to raise awareness about the need to reduce energy consumption through reasonable and sustainable energy use. The message is simple: “Save Money. Cut Pollution. Create Jobs”. Canada and the United have celebrated this date on October 5th since 2016, and Europe will celebrate Energy Efficiency Day for the first time on October 13th, 2022.
Since 2019, we have reduced CO2 emissions in our factory in Billund by 9%. This has been achieved due to reduced consumption of electricity (5%), natural gas (8,8%) and bottled gas (26%), generated as a result of energy efficiency initiatives. When contrasted against turnover, CO2 emission reductions have become 4,1% more profitable since 2019, thus showing real gains against company activity.
The goal of today is to share tips, tools, and stories to promote the multiple benefits of energy efficiency and actions to achieve it. Energy efficiency is the cheapest, quickest way to meet our energy needs and reduce consumer costs, emissions, and pollution; therefore, a necessary action to reduce GHG emissions and mitigate climate change. As efforts to reduce our emissions increase, energy efficiency has also become an economic engine as an independent industry, providing around 2 million jobs in the US alone. Transitioning to a net-zero economy powered by renewables is a more imminent need than ever. Governments have now defined their goals, as have some companies and private organisations. Increasing energy efficiency will be an integral part of this transition to ensure that renewable energies can be optimised and deployed at greater speed. At Modulex, we take this very seriously and have set our emission reduction goals to support the national goals in Denmark of 70% emission reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. Our goal at Modulex is to reduce our carbon emissions by 50% in 2030 compared to our 2019 baseline. As a part of Energy Efficiency Day 2022, we would like to share some insights into how we have increased our energy efficiency at Modulex.
Firstly, our factory in Billund follows LEAN manufacturing methodology. LEAN methodology ensures increased efficiency and organisation within the company, which can yield energy savings due to reduced space or internal re-organisation of processes. Secondly, hardware and process changes in our facilities have enabled us to tackle the low-hanging fruits of our energy efficiency journey. Switching to LED activity-controlled illumination has helped reduce our electricity consumption substantially. Furthermore, increasing maintenance and renovation of manufacturing processes has enabled us to identify malfunctions which cause increased consumption and to replace processes where there were obvious energy-saving opportunities. From a product and material perspective, we aim to offer materials with a lower carbon footprint made from renewable and certified materials that help us decrease the impact of our products from a life cycle perspective. This makes our assortment more energy efficient, as it can cover the same customer needs at a much lower carbon footprint. Furthermore, a great extent of our workforce is based remotely and working from home. Thus, commuting emissions represent an extremely low portion of our total emissions. Finally, our corporate culture is a crucial part of our energy efficiency journey. Becoming more efficient is not only about identifying individual actions that can generate gains but about anchoring our environmental goals internally and engaging all employees to establish a company culture that will foster these gains. At Modulex, internal communication sponsoring and endorsing energy-efficient behaviour and actions is a key part of our strategy to achieve our goals. We have established rewards systems for initiatives from any employee aiming to increase our efficiency. With this, we strive to achieve energy savings at all levels of our organisation.
Today is an exciting opportunity to share our progress and spread awareness about the importance of reducing energy consumption. Nonetheless, this should be a priority today and all year round.
