Malmö Stadsteater
Malmö Stadsteater, formerly known as Hippodromen, is a renowned cultural landmark in Malmö, Sweden. This theatre is a hub of artistic expression and creativity. The theatre’s recent exterior signage project won Sweden’s prestigious “Sign of the Year 2023” award, highlighting its innovative design and commitment to sustainability.
In collaboration with Malmö Stad, Haworth Tompkins Architects, and Urgent Agency, the team in Sweden designed and implemented both exterior and interior signage for Malmö Stadsteater.
The project’s scope involved crafting a standout exterior sign for the main entrance on Kalendegatan. This sign features standalone letters in a copper hue, both front and back, made from aluminium with perforated holes. During the day, the letters display their copper colour, while at night, warm white LED lighting (3000K) from the recycled acrylic layer beneath illuminates the letters, adding life and texture to the signage in the evening.
Interior signage includes glowing boxes made from recycled acrylic with warm white LED lighting, providing a consistent, eco-friendly lighting solution. Plywood signs were also used within the theatre, contributing to a coherent and sustainable visual communication strategy across both indoor and outdoor spaces.
The project incorporated eco-friendly elements, including Green Cast® recycled acrylic and dynamic dimmed LED lighting, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability without compromising the design or functionality.
