Dorothea Dix Gipson Play Plaza
The Dorothea Dix Gipson Play Plaza is a dynamic outdoor space designed to bring families and communities together in the heart of Raleigh. Modulex was proud to support this initiative through a comprehensive exterior signage program, working in collaboration with Balfour Beatty and Holt Brothers Construction, on behalf of the City of Raleigh.
The signage scope focused entirely on exterior elements, with a strong emphasis on wayfinding and ADA compliance, making the project accessible to people with disabilities. The wayfinding signs were designed to guide visitors intuitively through the plaza, while the ADA signage ensured accessibility for all users.
A key challenge emerged around the design of the larger wayfinding signs, which featured embedded maps. Initially, the client requested a single-panel solution, but our design team recommended separating the map into its own panel. This approach allowed for easier updates and proved invaluable when a last-minute change to the map’s verbiage required a revision. Thanks to the modular design, only the map panel needed to be replaced, saving time and cost.
The Dorothea Dix Gipson Play Plaza stands as a testament to thoughtful design and collaboration. From navigating signage challenges to delivering durable, accessible solutions, this project reflects the kind of creative problem-solving and partnership that defines our work at Modulex.
