When one of the world’s most recognized sports organizations set out to create a new workplace environment in Toronto, the goal was far more than simply outfitting an office. The space needed to reflect the history, culture, and energy of professional hockey while supporting the day-to-day needs of employees and visitors alike.

Working in partnership with Sterling Project Development and the architect firm TPG Architects in New York, who designed the signage for the space, the Modulex team in Toronto delivered a comprehensive signage and environmental graphics programme for the National Hockey League’s corporate office in Toronto. Spanning two floors and completed in multiple phases, the project brought together wayfinding, branded environments, architectural graphics, and custom-fabricated elements to create a workplace that feels unmistakably connected to the game.

Creating a Cohesive Workplace Experience

The project called for a signage solution that balanced functionality with storytelling. Every element needed to support navigation and accessibility while contributing to a cohesive brand experience throughout the workplace.

To achieve this, the signage programme combined some of the precision-manufactured components from Modulex’s flagship factory in Billund, Denmark, with custom environmental graphics designed specifically for the space. Interior wayfinding and room identification signage were produced using Etronit, providing a durable and consistent solution across the office.

The program included:

  • Room identification signage
  • Restroom identification signage
  • Accessible signage solutions
  • Workstation identification
  • Meeting room graphics
  • Elevator and stairway identifiers
  • Environmental branding elements
  • Large-format wall graphics and murals

Together, these elements create a straightforward navigation experience while reinforcing the visual identity of the organization at every touchpoint.

Celebrating the Culture of Hockey

A defining feature of the project is the extensive use of environmental graphics throughout the workplace. Large-scale murals, historical imagery, vinyl graphics, and curated visual displays transform circulation areas, meeting spaces, and collaborative environments into immersive experiences that celebrate the sport’s legacy.

Rather than serving as decoration alone, these graphic elements contribute to the overall workplace atmosphere, connecting employees and visitors to the history, passion, and community that hockey represents.

Throughout the office, branded storytelling moments help create a sense of place while supporting the NHL’s identity in an authentic and engaging way.

A Signature Focal Point

One of the most distinctive components of the project is the custom stainless steel NHL shield logo installed at the reception area.

Achieving the final approved appearance required extensive collaboration and careful material evaluation. Multiple finish samples were reviewed throughout the approval process to ensure the final product aligned with the client’s expectations.

The project team also faced a significant scheduling challenge as fabrication timelines tightened near the installation deadline. Through close coordination and strategic planning, the team successfully completed the feature on schedule.

Today, the installation serves as a striking focal point, creating a memorable first impression for anyone entering the space.

International Collaboration, Local Delivery

The success of the project reflects the strength of collaboration across multiple teams and disciplines.

From manufacturing expertise in Denmark to project management, design coordination, and installation in Toronto, each phase required careful alignment to ensure every element worked together as part of a unified environmental experience.

The result is a workplace where signage is more than a functional requirement. It becomes an integral part of the architecture, supports accessibility and navigation, reinforces brand identity, and enhances the overall user experience.

A Project Defined by Precision and Partnership

Projects of this scale require more than products alone. They demand thoughtful design, technical expertise, meticulous coordination, and a commitment to delivering solutions that align with both operational needs and brand objectives.

The NHL Toronto office demonstrates how strategic signage and environmental graphics can help transform a workplace into an engaging brand environment, one that celebrates identity, supports people, and creates lasting impressions.

For the team at our Toronto office, the project stands as an example of what is possible when design, fabrication, and collaboration come together in pursuit of a shared vision.
