Greenguard Certification & Chemicals

SUSTAINABILITY | 11.30.20

The air indoors is two to five times more polluted than outside air, according to the Greenguard Environmental Institute and UL Environment. Airborne chemicals from furniture, paints and coatings, cleaning products and other common goods are responsible for this. This is why it is important that we take it seriously when it comes to the chemicals used in our signage.

Sign inks, protective coating, adhesives and even some materials such as acrylic contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These contribute to the greenhouse effect and severely diminish indoor air quality and health. Green builders strongly prefer signage with inventoried chemical ingredients and low levels of VOCs, heavy metals and other harmful chemicals. Sign manufacturers are responding to this by reducing VOCs and heavy metals.

Greenguard certification has been widely adopted as a trusted standard for low-emitting and healthy products. When a product bears Greenguard certification, it meets strict chemical emissions limits and has been empirically tested for more than 10,000 chemicals. At our factory in Billund, our UV-print and eco-solvent graphics – wall, window, floor and panel decorations – are all printed using Greenguard Gold Certified Inks. This includes printed panels but excludes braille and tactile technologies and white UV-print. Equally, no VOCs, solvents, or chemicals are released from our paint after being hardened in the oven.

VOC emissions have fallen by 45.5 % during the period 2011-2018. As a result of the incorporation of eco-friendly technologies such as UV-printing, solvents emissions have fallen by 85.7 % since 2011.

Greenguard Gold is the highest tier of Greenguard certifications available. It has been designed to define products suitable for use in sensitive environments such as schools and healthcare facilities, where vulnerable people spend extended periods of time.

On top of this, our factory in Billund has developed a chrome-free pretreatment for aluminum products, which ensures the same high-quality finish but is much safer for people and the environment. By removing most heavy metals from our coating solutions, chemical waste in Billund’s factory has been cut down by 43 % since 2011.

At Modulex, the health of our customers and employees is a top priority together with our care for the environment. Our inks and graphics are safer than most alternatives in the market, and thus a solution to make indoor environments safer and reduce chemical waste.
