Creating the ultimate learning environment is the goal for any school project and significantly enhancing the space can go on to create award winning spaces. Modulex are proud to have worked with JJW Architects on the South Harbour School, Copenhagen which has gone on to win the WAN Education Award as announced on 26 April 2016.
Driven by a requirement from the Municipality of Copenhagen to create a space which can become an active part of the regeneration area of Støberigade, JJW have kept central to their design the need for a space which can become an active and socially sustainable part of the new neighbourhood.
Surprises and new experiences are central to the design encouraging both active learning and sociable activity for the children. Classes are encouraged in both traditional spaces as well as exciting hideaways where small groups can be taught.
Wayfinding around the 9,500 sq m site has been managed with a combination of around 300 elements combining both standard and customised items. Not detracting from the architecture but clear for the children, staff and visitors to see, the Messenger Exterior and Basic Interior signs have been selected.
Throughout the school, vinyl graphics adorn glass panels to identify special areas, like the school dentist. Designed by the Modulex Graphic Designers, the maritime theme supports the local environment whilst relaxing any reluctant visitors.
The space will also be used as a central social hub for the community where local residents will be able to attend special classes such as music and cooking and will be guided to the initially unfamiliar site with impressive external signage from Modulex.
